Hello globblings! Professor Floob here to teach you about a very cool thing that occurs in nature called bioluminescence! Bioluminescence is when a living creature creates light naturally from its body!

One of the most well-known bioluminescent organisms is the firefly! You’ve probably heard of it and maybe even seen one! The picture above is of an adult female. They come out at night during the summer and glow to attract a mate!

Oh no, it’s an alien attack!!! No, wait… that’s just glowing fungus. There are over 60 species of glowing mushrooms, and this one is called Panellus Stipticus. It grows on logs and tree stumps in many countries all over the world. A popular nickname for bioluminescent fungi is “foxfire.” Sounds pretty cool!

This is a Dana Octopus Squid which can reach up to 7.5 feet in length, and 135 pounds! It’s like the glowing 8-armed Shaquille O’Neal of the sea! This squid uses its bioluminescence along with a mesmerizing little dance to lure its prey. Check out a video of this squid in action (WARNING: it’s pretty freaky!):
Pretty cool, huh? I wish I could glow in the dark!
